The group’s “Cahoots” will be back in the 50th anniversary box

A 50th anniversary box set dedicated to the group’s fourth studio album Coalition will extend beyond the newly remixed and remastered original tracks.

The set, scheduled for December 10, will also include excerpts and alternative versions of songs from the era, as well as a partial bootleg concert from 1971 recorded live at the Olympia Theater in Paris, a Blu-ray audio disc, rare photographs and new sleeve notes. Formats will include CD, digital, and vinyl, and they’re available for pre-order now.

Highlights on Coalition include a cover of “When I Paint My Masterpiece” by Bob Dylan, frequent collaborator of the group, and an appearance by Van Morrison, another resident of Woodstock, on “4% Pantomime”. A recently remastered version of “Life is a Carnival” can be heard below.

It all presents an updated overall sound, after singer-songwriter Robbie Robertson said he and mixer Bob Clearmountain approached the process from a new perspective. “I said to Bob, ‘There are no rules,'” Robertson said in a press release. “So every mix we do, I want to start from scratch. I don’t even want to listen to the original. I want to listen to the way we hear it now, and be fearless and experimental with it.”

This is actually in line with the attitude surrounding the original recordings, Robertson added. “At the start of these sessions,” he said, “we didn’t know if we were doing another Basement tapes where no one would hear the music or if we made a real record. “

Robertson praised the clarity that followed as the Coalition the box came to life. “That’s what I really wanted to say,” he said. “It’s the honesty of it now. It’s a trip. It’s something special.
