Sophie Ellis-Bextor is set to make an appearance on Australian soap opera Neighbors as the show is filming in London.

The singer, 42, made a cameo appearance with Ramsay Street regular Jemma Donovan at The Queens Walk along the south bank of the Thames.

Viewers will be able to see Sophie’s scenes next spring in the UK and Australia, when Harlow visits the English capital and reunites with his aunt Harriet (Amanda Holden) in London.

Harriet travels to the UK to solve a family mystery regarding Harlow’s mother and late sister Prue, played by Denise van Outen in 2019.

Joining the cast, Sophie said, “Neighbors were a big part of my school years. We all watched it, loved it, talked about it.

“It’s a joy to be able to say now that I participated! Thanks to all the cast and crew for being so lovely. I liked it!’

On the casting of Sophie, Jason Herbison, executive producer of Neighbors, said: “We are absolutely delighted with the way the shoot went with the wonderful Amanda Holden and Jemma Donovan, who Sophie Ellis-Bextor is joining us on is the icing on the cake and we look forward to sharing the story with our UK audiences next year. ‘

It comes after Amanda was first pictured on the set of Neighbors on Monday.

Channel 5 released the first footage from the shoot after the couple filmed in Waterloo, London, together ahead of the episodes that aired in the spring.

Between filming scenes, Amanda and Jemma posed for a snap together as they held up the Ramsay Street sign.

Amanda also revealed that many passers-by believe the couple are related in real life.

She said: “My first day on set was such a fun and surreal experience. If I had told my 12/13 year old self that I would one day appear in Neighbors, I would never have believed it!

“So many people were beeping in their cars and passers-by thought Jemma was my real girl because we look so much alike! I can’t wait to continue my character Harriet’s journey.

Speaking to Instagram on Sunday, Amanda gave fans a glimpse of her posh persona as she spoke on the phone.

“Oh hello operator, Ramsay Street please,” she said with an upper crust accent.

Amanda captioned the post, “Everyone needs good @neighbors Back on set tomorrow with the gorgeous @jemma_donovan.”

While now known for her work with Heart Radio and Britain’s Got Talent, Amanda is an accomplished actress with roles in Wild at Heart, The Grimleys and Cutting It.

Amanda said in a statement: “Like most people in the UK in the late 80s and early 90s, I grew up watching Neighbors every day.

‘I was glued to our TV for Kylie’s wedding [Minogue] and Jason [Donovan], cursing Mrs. Mangel [Vivean Gray] and praying that Mike and Jane [Guy Pearce and Jane Harris] would eventually come together! Not to mention all the other greats over the years.

“Now to have the opportunity to be a part of such an iconic Australian show is just amazing. I look forward to working with Jemma in London. It sounds like a joyous occasion for everyone.

The news comes amid fears the iconic Australian soap may be canceled, after an already troubled year caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

Last month, the production company behind the hit TV show, Fremantle Media, told ABC that changes to local content quotas could result in the deaths of Ramsey Street residents.

“I think that in the environment in the clear, the neighbors could very certainly be in danger if the quotas [for Australian content] had to change, ”said CEO Chris Oliver-Taylor.

The long-running drama was forced to halt production earlier this year as the health crisis began.

At the time, commercial broadcasters – which are governed by strict rules and must broadcast 55% of locally produced content – pleaded for a stay as they saw their revenues and ratings plummet.

The federal government threw a temporary lifeline to struggling networks by suspending quotas for locally produced dramas, documentaries and children’s shows.

The quota review has been suspended – with an option to extend the suspension if necessary until 2021.

However, the networks are now calling for permanent change, saying the old rules are “obsolete”.

Oliver Taylor explained that it could mean death for many shows.
