Japanese avant-garde metal veterans SIGH will release their 11th studio album, “Heir to Despair”, November 16 via Candlelight records.
While the previous album, “Tomb” (2015), it was more like orchestral symphonic stuff, “Heir to Despair” points in the completely opposite direction. Heavily inspired by crazy old progressive bands like BRAINTICKET, EMBRYO, WITHOUT AGITATION, BETWEEN, NICE GIANT, MUTANT BONES, MODULO 1000, BLACK WIDOW, etc., “Heir to Despair” turned out to be a heavy, psychedelic and exotic album filled with vintage keyboards and flute.
“Homo Homini Lupus” is the first track to be shared from the recording with guest voices from Philippe Anselme (PANTERA, DOWN, SUPERJOINT).
Singer Mirai Kawashima comments: ““Homo Homini Lupus” is one of the fastest and easiest tracks on “Heir to Despair”. Don’t expect other songs to sound like this.
““Homo Homini Lupus” means “man is the wolf for man” in Latin. Thomas hobbes refers to this verb to describe how humans would act in the state of nature before we were civilized. The world shown in ‘The Walking Dead’ the show should be the best example of who we really are. Men become wolves, or should I say men are wolves in their very nature. See what our ancestors did during the war! See what our ancestors did during the famine! We have our own wolves inside. ”
Mirai meet Philippe 20 years ago when they were both in an American death metal band NECROPHAGY. Mirai said: “It’s a great honor for us to finally have him on our album! He added a great atmosphere to the song with his very deep vocals! It should be VERY easy for you to tell which parts were sung through Phil. “
What the group describes with this album is the world through the eyes of madness. Yes, the album is about madness. The music on the album is as varied as the thoughts of a madman. It starts with psychedelic and exotic “Alétheia” but the next one “Homo Homini Lupus” is more of a simple thrash song with the typical SIGH turn. “In delusional memories” is a brutal tune with heavy Asian touches, which must be a new experience for everyone, while “Heresy Trilogy” is the representation of sheer madness and madness with lots of crazy stuff that has nothing to do with metal at all. The album ends with the title track, which is a 10 minute progressive epic song.
It should come as no surprise to SIGH fans, but the album contains everything from extreme metal, 60s / 70s rock, jazz, classical, world music, dub and noise. The styles of music he covers are as vast as the world through the eyes of madness. Also “Heir to Despair” can be taken as SIGHThe first attempt to intentionally soak up the Japanese / Asian musical sensation. Mirai used some traditional Japanese singing techniques and the ancient master Estradasphere Shamisen (the traditional Japanese instrument) Kevin Kmetz is present on several songs. In addition, 90% of the lyrics are in Japanese, which has never happened in the past. SIGH albums.
The album was mixed by a Canadian engineer, Phil Anderson and mastered by Maor Appelbaum, who has worked with many great artists such as MORE FAITH, YES and Yngwie Malmsteen, to only cite a few. Phil and Maor have a perfect combination and they have worked together on many projects. Thanks to them, “Heir to Despair” turned out to be the heaviest SIGH album.
The cover, which corresponds exactly to the concept of the album, was again designed by Eliran Kantor. Eliran made the works of art for the past SIGH albums such as “Scenes from Hell” (2010) and “In somniphobia” (2012).
Mirai adds: “I just suggested Eliran that the album is all about madness and gave him an advertisement for Japanese psychotropic drugs from the 60s / 70s, which I love, to show him what kind of art I wanted. The result was perfect. The woman in the artwork looks apparently happy, but the plant she is watering withers and her bedroom looks like a mess. This is what real madness is. That’s what real horror is. These days people try to pretend to be as happy as possible on SNS, but what kind of darkness do they have in mind? You can no longer draw the line between reason and insanity. “
