Remember Gary Barlow’s special appearance in ITV drama Heartbeat

We take a look back at the time when Take That icon Gary Barlow made a special appearance in beloved Yorkshire drama Heartbeat.

Between 1992 and 2010, the nostalgic crime drama, set in Aidensfield, was a must-watch for millions of us. It aired Sunday evening on ITV1.

Over the years, a few famous faces have appeared for an appearance here and there. Without a doubt, one of the most eye-catching has been Take that star Gary Barlow returned in 2000.

At the time, Gary was only 29 years old and was in the middle of his solo career. As some of you may recall, he played the role of hitchhiker Micky Shannon in what was Heartbeat’s 150th memorial episode of the police drama set in the 1960s.

In the episode, Micky is taken in by the iconic character Greengrass and he does some nonsense in the village.

“I used to go to see my grandmother on Sundays and she always turned it on, even though she called it ‘Heartbreak’,” talk to bbc, in 2000.

“It’s a family show – the kind of thing you watch on a Sunday night.

“Most of my scenes were with Bill Maynard (who played Greengrass). We had a crack, we really laughed, him being a northern comic – that was awesome.”

Gary found it fun to work as a team again after leaving Take That – which then got back together a few years later.

He said: “One of the things that I have enjoyed is working with a lot of people.

“Because I’ve been working alone for quite some time since leaving the band – it was great to be part of a team again.”

At the end of the special episode, Gary sings All That I’ve Give Away, from his 1999 album Twelve Months, Eleven Days.

Heartbeat was filmed across Yorkshire with Goathland in North Yorkshire serving as the backdrop for the fictional Aidensfield. To this day, fans still visit the village to remember Heartbeat.
