Matt Damon in Irish reunion with appearance at Dalkey Book Festival

Dalkey’s favorite adopted son, Matt Damon, has been announced as a guest speaker at this year’s Dalkey Book Festival.

The Jason Bourne actor will talk to David McWilliams on Sunday, June 20 about the lockdown in the fairytale village, his order of sandwiches from The Country Bake, bags of cans and his love of Ireland at a event broadcast live.

The actor spent much of early 2020 locked up in the resort town of Dublin due to the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic and quickly won the hearts of locals.

The Hollywood star was adopted by the village within days and has become a regular at local cafes and bookstores as he and his family stayed in the former home of Formula 1 star Eddie Irvine.

Images of him carrying his clothes to Vico’s swimming spot in a SuperValu bag firmly cemented him as the ‘man next door’.

The actor and his family were in custody in Dublin where he was filming director Ridley Scott’s The Last Duel, before it was closed in early March and travel restrictions were put in place around the world.

Describing lockdown life in Dublin last year, Matt said: “It’s amazing. It is one of the most beautiful places we have ever been.

“Even during the lockdown they say to themselves’ you have to stay within two kilometers of your house.” Two kilometers here there are trees and forests and woods and an ocean and I don’t see a place where you would like to be within a two kilometer radius.

“It looks a bit, you know, like a fairy tale here. “

A photo of Matt holding a SuperValu bag at the local Vico swim site went viral after social media users attempted to guess what was inside.

“I was with the kids, we were swimming in the water there, so we had towels to dry off, so I think we just took one of our SuperValu bags and filled it. We were just improvising, ”the Good Will Hunting star told Spin 1038 last year.

“I’m sure there were cans in there – we just had to take them out to put the beach towels.”

Matt’s extended stay at Dalkey has become the talk of the nation and he will relive his romance with Ireland when he joins a group of stellar speakers at this year’s festival, including President Michael D. Higgins, the international bestselling author Isabel Allende, Professor Brian Cox and Russian businessman in exile Mikhail Khodorkovsky, among others.

Matt will be appearing via video link, and the full schedule of 23 events, which will be broadcast from the Martello Tower, and tickets are available at
