British mood artist Kelly Lee Owens has announced that her third studio album, titled LP.8, is on the way (April 29, Smalltown Supersound). The announcement of the acclaimed 2020s sequel Inside edge arrives with two very different tracks: the album’s anxious, buzzing closer “Sonic 8” and its soothing, layered antidote, “Olga.”
Made in Oslo with avant-noise producer Lasse Marhaug (Merzbow, Sunn O))), Jenny Hval), LP.8 emerged from what a press release described as “an unbridled exploration into the creative subconscious”, with Owens aiming to combine “harsh industrial sounds with ethereal Celtic mysticism, creating music that moves back and forth between tension and liberation”, and citing Throbbing Gristle and Enya as major influences. “For me, 8 meant completion,” Owens said in a statement, “an album that will reverberate endlessly with me personally.”
This contrast between tension and release certainly comes from comparing the first two tracks that Owens shared with us. “Sonic 8” finds Owens singing what sounds like a deadpan warning message over explosive industrial beats and whispery backup vocals that seem to reveal any fear missing from Owens’ lead vocals. The repeated panicked whispers of “anxiety”, “help us” and “what do we do now?” brushing up against the terse lead vocal that notes, “You know, I’ve felt for a long time now that something is wrong, deeply wrong,” as if it just occurred to him. In a way the contrast is almost funny, but it also reflects being forced to carry on as if things are going well when they clearly aren’t (sounds oddly familiar to what many of are crossing us now! Huh!). In wild contrast to those two voices in our heads, “Olga” almost feels like a sigh of relief, with Owens’ wordless angelic harmonies overwhelming the senses.
Owens is gearing up to play a ton of shows, mostly on the festival circuit, throughout the summer in Australia, the UK and Europe. Dates in the United States, if she plans to perform, have yet to be announced.
