Jeff Beck and Johnny Depp have announced a new studio collaboration. The scrapbook, 18featuring a wide range of covers and several originals, will be released on July 15, 2022. Listen to four of the tracks below.
From the original June 9 announcement: Beck found a kindred spirit in Depp when the two met in 2016. They quickly bonded over cars and guitars and spent most of their time together trying to make yourself laugh. At the same time, Beck’s appreciation grew for Depp’s serious songwriting skills and ear for music. This talent and their chemistry convinced Beck that they should make an album together.
Depp agreed and they started in 2019. Over the next three years they recorded a mix of Depp originals as well as a wide range of covers that touch on everything from Celtic to Motown to the Beach Boys and Killing Joke. In 2020, during the pandemic, they premiered their collaboration with their timely cover of John Lennon’s “Isolation.”
beck explains the title of the album: “When Johnny and I started playing together, it really ignited our youthful spirit and our creativity. We were joking about how we felt like 18 again, so that became the title of the album too.
The cover features an illustration of Beck and Depp at the age of 18 which was drawn and designed by Beck’s wife, Sandra.
Prior to the album’s release, Beck embarked on a European tour, with Depp as a special guest.

For the past 12 years, Depp has recorded and toured with the Hollywood Vampires, a band he founded with Alice Cooper and Joe Perry. The supergroup has released two studio albums which include guest appearances by some of rock’s biggest names: Paul McCartney, Dave Grohl and Joe Walsh. The list also includes Beck, who played guitar on “Welcome to Bushwackers”, a song on To go upthe second album of the Vampires, released in 2019.
Shortly after, Depp asked Beck to play the lead on a track he had written, the album’s first single, “This Is a Song For Miss Hedy Lamarr”, a tribute to the actress/ inventor. Beck says it was the catalyst for the collaboration and is one of his favorite songs on the new album. “I was blown away by it,” he says. “This song is one of the reasons I asked him to do an album with me.”
Of Beck, Depp said, “It’s an amazing honor to play and write music with Jeff, one of the real greats and someone I now have the privilege of calling my brother. “
Depp vindicates Beck’s faith in the new album by showing off his incredible emotional range on songs like “Venus In Furs,” written by Lou Reed and featured on the 1967 album The Velvet Underground and Nico, as well as the Everlys. Brothers. the ballad “Let It Be Me” and the soul classic “What’s Going On” by Marvin Gaye.
Beck turned 78 on June 24, 2022.
On the instrumentals, Beck demonstrates why he’s universally revered as a guitar god with jaw-dropping versions of Davy Spillane’s “Midnight Walker” and two songs from the Beach Boys’ masterpiece, animal sounds – “Caroline, no” and “Don’t talk (Put your head on my shoulder)”.
Brian Wilson said “Caroline, No”, the last song on the Beach Boys’ 1966 album animal sounds might be the best song he’s ever written. “This whole album has been a huge support to me in some horrible times,” says Beck. “I had left the Yardbirds and I regretted it because I had nothing. I was back with my mom and dad. I thought, okay, I’m not going to sit idly by.
“So I bought a stereo and animal sounds, and I was just glued to the spot. I remember it was great healing for losing the Yardbirds, Jimi Hendrix stomping around and losing my girlfriend. This all happened on what seemed to be the same day.

In the studio, Beck says he and Depp challenged each other to step out of their comfort zone with the songs they chose to cover. “I haven’t had another creative partner like him in ages,” says Beck. “He was a major force on this record. I just hope people take him seriously as a musician because it’s hard for some people to accept that Johnny Depp can sing rock and roll.
