Every track on Lang’s upcoming album was inspired by real historical events. In writing “They Sawed Up a Storm”, Lang wanted to tell the story of the strength, skill and determination of a group of women who operated a sawmill at Turkey Pond in Concord, NH in 1942.
The purpose of the sawmill was to recover the wood felled by the great hurricane of 1938.
Lang explains:A colleague of mine in the lumber industry, Sarah Shea Smith, discovered the story of the woman’s sawmill in Turkey Pond NH. After much research, she wrote a book about the events that led to the construction of the mill and propelled this group of women to become heroes of their time. Sarah’s book inspired me to write this song. Thirteen patriotic women came to the NH State House offering to run the sawmill after the men who operated it joined the effort in World War II. Although many doubted it would work, they got permission and the rescue operation continued. This group of courageous and determined women in the service of their country saved the situation and marked history. This song was written to celebrate their historic achievement and share their story in song..”
