Eala bows out of us open girls singles

FILIPINO tennis ace Alex Eala withdrew from the US Open Girls’ singles tournament, losing to Switzerland’s Sebastianna Scilipoti, unranked, 5-7, 3-6, early Friday (Philippine time) ) at the USTA Billie Jean King Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, New York.

Second seed Eala was unable to face Scilipoti in crucial parts of the game delayed by several hours due to the rains.

Eala, 16, who was playing her third game in 28 hours, even had to take a medical timeout before game eight of the second set as she looked exhausted, behind Sclipoti at 3-4.

When play resumed, Sclipoti won the next three games with a backhand error from Eala.

Eala couldn’t capitalize on her services as Scilipoti, 18, broke her on several occasions. Eala’s mistakes also spelled the end of her campaign as she made 45 unforced errors and nine double faults in the match which lasted one hour and 42 minutes.

Nonetheless, this is still Eala’s best performance at the US Open, reaching the quarter-finals for the first time.

Eala, however, is still alive in the girls’ doubles event with her Belgian partner Hanne Vandewinkel. The duo were to face the American tandem of Madison Sieg and Elizabeth Coleman in the quarterfinals on Saturday morning. The game was originally scheduled for Friday morning, but was postponed to Saturday due to the heavy downpour.
