DREAM THEATER keyboardist Jordan rudess spoke to “The Chuck Schute Podcast” on the band’s next album, “A view from the top of the world”, which is due out on October 22. Speaking of whether the first two singles on the LP, “Invisible monster” and “The alien”, are representative of the entire effort, Jordan noted: “DREAM THEATER the fans are incredibly active – they all have opinions; they’re all experts – which is an interesting space for all of us, as artists in the band, it’s interesting that this happens all the time.
“I would say it’s hard when you put out a track or two to totally know what’s coming up. Everyone wants to listen. “Invisible monster” and say, ‘Oh, it’s that the DREAM THEATER is the album? ‘ Oh, well, then I’ll love it. Or, ‘I don’t know.’ But in the meantime, it is a small offering of a great work. So anyone who’s listening to this and hasn’t heard the album yet, knows there’s a lot more going on stylistically than either of these songs.
“I would say if you were to judge a book by its cover, the best cover to judge it is ‘The alien’, because this one is a little more open-minded; it’s not trying to be a more concise song, “he explained.” And that’s a bit more of the subject of the album, because, first of all, most of the songs are longer. . So ‘The alien’ kind of tells the story – he’s got the virtuosity, he’s got the metal, he’s got the proggy, he’s got the melodic, he kind of shows you what we were looking for in this whole album. But, again, even that doesn’t cover everything. It’s just a song; and we went in other directions too. “
According to rudeness, “A view from the top of the world” is “not a concept album”. “Each song is really its own thing,” he said. “If anything ties it together, it’s the desire we had to do an album in a certain way. We knew we wanted to be heavy; we wanted to have really good hooks. The vocal sections, we always love. to be too We wanted to have some really interesting leads – to exchange between me and [guitarist] Petrucci jeans. So there are elements that connect it more than anything else. Because I think every DREAM THEATER album, to some extent you can almost sort of put it in a particular category. As someone says, ‘‘Octavarium’, this is your prog album, ‘or,’“Train of thought”, this is your heavy album. ‘ That doesn’t quite ring true to me – these categorizations – because these albums are deep, and there’s always a bit of everything we do. Even on “Train of thought”, there is a lot of proggy stuff out there too; ‘As I am’ is on this album. So you can find things that you could say [make it seem like] the “heavy” album. But the reality is that you have ‘Flow of consciousness’ – this is one of the songs on “Train of thought” – it’s really more prog than anything else. “

DREAM THEATER – made up of James labrie, Petrucci jeans, Jordan rudess, John myung and Mike Mangini – was in the middle of a sold-out world tour in support of their latest outing “The distance in time” and the 20th anniversary of “Scenes from a memory” when a global pandemic brought the world to a halt. The musicians met at home, with LaBrie in Canada and the rest of the group in the United States. As fate would have it, they had just finished building the DTHQ (Dream Theater Headquarters) – a combination of live recording studio, rehearsal space, control room, storage equipment and a creative beehive. With LaBrie in Canada, he first wrote with the group via Zoom on a DTHQ monitor. In March 2021, he flew to New York, was quarantined, and recorded his voice face to face with Petrucci.
